Activity Overview: Students use the "Future Forecaster" game in Future Quest Island to forecast a future career. As a follow-up discussion, they look at the concept of randomness and predictability in career paths. Four video clips of career profiles provide a platform for discussion.

Objective: Students will be able to discuss and differentiate the concept of predictability of a person’s  career path.

Teacher Prep: 10-15 minutes. Print copies of the ‘random versus predictable activity sheet. If viewing video clips as a class, set up laptop and projector.

Duration: One class period

NOTE: Student instructions only need to be sent through FQI ‘My Messages’ if lesson completed independently or in small groups.

Student Instructions:

Step 1: Sail to the video cave

Step 2: Click on the ‘College & Career’ tab

Step 3: Watch the following video clips

 

Step 4: Complete part two of the ‘Random or Predictable’ activity sheet

NOTE: This lesson can be completed as a class, small groups, pairs, or individually. Depending on what works best for your class, you can adapt lesson steps accordingly. It is suggested that students log in, but close their laptop (or mobile device) until Step 2 is completed.

Lesson Steps:

Step 1. Do Now: Choose a key question and have class ‘Think, Pair, Share’ responses.

Step 2. Distribute the ‘Random or Predictable’ activity sheet.  

Step 3. Complete part one of the sheet. Debrief as a class(Students may take a few minutes to complete part one of the sheet individually or in groups. Conversely, it may be beneficial to complete as a class.)

Step 4. Students will watch four short clips (located in the Video Cave) and complete part two of the activity sheet.

 

Step 5. Debrief as a class discussing student responses and opinions. If time allows, students may also discuss another Key Question verbally, or via an FQI writing prompt.
